What is a hernia?
A hernia is a gap or weak point in the abdominal wall through which internal tissue (usually fat or a loop of bowel) pushes outward, creating a visible bulge. You may notice it more when you stand, cough or strain.
Hernias do not heal on their own and do not go away with medication or exercise. The gap tends to widen slowly over time. Surgery is the only definitive treatment: closing the defect and reinforcing the wall with a mesh.

Tissue layers
When it is urgent. Strangulation is when trapped tissue loses its blood supply, causing sudden severe pain, vomiting and a firm, tender bulge. That requires emergency assessment the same day.
What types of hernia are treated?
Inguinal hernia
The most common type: tissue pushes through the inguinal canal in the groin. More common in men. Both direct and indirect inguinal hernias are repaired laparoscopically.
Umbilical hernia
Tissue protrudes through the navel (belly button). Common in adults, particularly those who are overweight or have had multiple pregnancies.
Incisional hernia
Occurs at the site of a previous abdominal surgical incision. Requires careful repair with mesh reinforcement to prevent recurrence.
Ventral / epigastric hernia
A hernia through the front abdominal wall, above the navel. Treated with laparoscopic or open repair depending on size and complexity.
Femoral hernia
Less common: occurs just below the inguinal ligament and carries a higher risk of strangulation. Prompt surgical repair is recommended.
Recurrent hernia

The operation is done under general anaesthesia.

Incisions of 5–10 mm let in a laparoscope and specialised instruments.

The herniated tissue is gently reduced back into the abdomen, and a surgical mesh reinforces the weakened wall, significantly reducing the chance of recurrence.

A: For adult hernias causing symptoms, surgery is generally recommended as hernias do not resolve on their own and carry a risk of complications. Small, asymptomatic hernias in certain patients may be monitored with watchful waiting.
Q: Can a hernia come back after surgery?
A: Recurrence is uncommon when surgery is performed correctly with mesh reinforcement. The recurrence rate with laparoscopic mesh repair is below 2%. Following post-operative instructions, particularly avoiding heavy lifting during recovery, further reduces this risk.
